Billings to Red Lodge dont get in a hurry. Go with the flow of traffic. Passing nets you little gain. Watch for oncoming vehicles darting out to pass into you. Red Lodge to Cooke City ( Beartooth Pass) is one of the great roads for bikers. Between East & West summits is a small herd of Mountain Goats that are often visible, sometimes right on the road. Be prepared for a summer squall of sleet/hail/wind at higher elevations. From the cutoff down the Chief Joseph pass towards Cody is a beautiful stretch with some technical turns up and down the pass. These arent racetrack quality as you may find in other parts of the country ( Oregon, Idaho) but you can run them at a vigorous pace and eliminate your chicken strips when the road is clean. Depending on wind/rain and RV traffic it can be excellent traction to very bad. It depends on the day. If you want to avoid traffic the mountains are virtually deserted after @ 5 PM as most tourists are at their motels or campsites by then. I´ve spoken to riders from Europe who have ridden the Swiss & Italian Alps who say \" these are better\".
WOW Spectacular road, gorgeous scenery. Remember to focus on the road and grab the scenery when you can. Keep your head on your side of the center line in the many sharp left hand curves.
I\'ve riding 4 times and can\'t wait to go over the top again.
One of the best rides in America.
