It's taken three years for all the road and bridge repairs to get completed, but it's done at last! This is such a nice ride: Multiple hairpin curves and a whole bunch of nice long sweeping turns. There are plenty of houses and cabins, so it's not made for real high speeds, but there's plenty of fun to be had under 45 miles an hour. I strongly recommend turning north from Ward and taking Highway 7 into Lyons. This is one of the sweetest stretches of road you will ever ride.
Parts of this road were taken out in the September flood, I would plan a trip on this until potentially next year.
Love this ride! It's a quickie from just north of Boulder up to Ward, rising 4,000 ft. in about forty-five minutes (leisurely.) There's an old grocery store there: Utica Market, which has pretty much what all little country stores have: Slim Jim's, soda, chips, many healthy juices (this IS Colorado . . .) hand knit alpaca hats, and a nice selection of Cold Steel tactical recon knives under the counter glass. The road (oh, the ROAD!)is pretty twisty; there are some turns you can't take at more than 25mph but most of it is longer loping turns. The lower end follows Left Hand Creek then twists up to Ward. You meet Peak to Peak Hwy. there, and can go north towards Estes Park, or south towards Nederland (or pretty much straight up to Brainard Lake.)
A nice variety of curves of this canyon section. little other traffic.
